Building Dynamic Interactive X3D Scenes: A Cookbook
Imitating the popular “Cookbook” approach to programming languages and
frameworks, we present composable recipes for authoring interactive
X3D scenes for presentation on the web. The intended audience will be
content authors with minimal experience with authoring X3D scenes but
with some background in web page authoring and use of online tools for
developing scripts. Attendees will see demonstrated techniques for
importing 3D geometry as the starting point for the X3D scene. We will
then explain design patterns for using a pointing device to interact
with and modify the scene, displaying useful annotations, assisting
the user in navigating the scene, and in presenting the 3D interactive
scene in a web page context with useful associations between the 3D
graphics and web page controls. Example scenes from the Cultural
Heritage, Computer Aided Engineering, Geographic Information Systems,
and Medical Imaging application areas will be used. The objective will
be to enable attendees to create their own scene using online and open
source tools and to publish them on web pages.
X3D Quickstart and X3D Version 4 Implementations

This summary tutorial explores and demonstrates the value of
interoperability and the opportunities of open, International
Standards Web3D technologies. As a high-level scene graph language and
API above graphics libraries, Extensible 3D (X3D) provides a suite of
standards including multiple data encodings and language bindings. We
will explore the myriad of approaches, tool chains, and applications
for building X3D objects and scenes.
This session also provides a current-draft specification overview
along with all X3Dv4 implementation assets. X3D Version 4 enables
authors to publish interactive 3D content anywhere on the Web, without
restrictions or plugins. Next-generation evolution + revolution is
combined with archival compatibility of existing legacy content. X3D
Version 4 (x3dv4) is a major upgrade to the Extensible 3D (X3D)
Graphics International Standard that aligns with W3C Recommendations
for HTML5 and Document Object Model (DOM). This is major work in
progress, driven by the X3D Graphics Working Group with regular

Workshop on Semantic 3D Content

The workshop will be organized by the X3D Semantic Web Working Group, whose mission is to publish models to the Web using X3D combined with the Semantic Web standards in order to best gain Web interoperability and enable intelligent 3D applications, feature-based 3D model querying, and reasoning over 3D scenes.
Semantic 3D/VR/AR is an emerging field of 3D graphics and animation. The semantic web, which has been derived from metadata and knowledge representation, aims at the evolutionary development of the current web towards a distributed database linking structured content described by ontologies. The semantic web is currently the main approach to building intelligent, explorable 3D applications in a variety of applications and domains, with content and animations described at different levels of abstraction.
Works related to various application domains, including e-commerce, education, cultural heritage, entertainment and infotainment, social media, tourism, medicine, military, industry and construction (and many others) are welcome. The approaches will be considered in the context of building scalable, pervasive 3D/VR/AR systems using different semantic formats (e.g., RDF, RDFS and OWL), 3D formats and browsers. Finally, common fields of interest and opportunities of future collaboration will be identified and discussed.
